Explanations for results of fire-coral experiment:

Water current is from the right. Yes. perception of water-borne chemicals from a potential host allows the fire coral to orientate its growth to the gorgonian piece on the right. Had the water current been predominantly from the left then we would have expected the little "hands" to have grown in that direction.

More metabolites are being produced by the larger-sized right-hand individual. No. Recall the design of the experiment: the gorgonian pieces were identical in size, at least they were at the start of the experiment.

The right-hand gorgonian species is more susceptible to being overgrown by fire coral. No. Recall the design of the experiment: the gorgonians are the same speces and, not only that, the pieces were cut from the same gorgonian colony.
